STATS Age: 6 years Breed: JRT X Papillon Likes: Other small dogs Dislikes: Being left on his own
Malachi has been in rehab foster care for some time now, and is ready for his forever home, but will need ongoing training and a patient, stay at home owner. Please read his spec carefully before applying. This is what his fosterer has to say about him:
'This little lad is a 6 year old Jack Russell Papillon cross, fully vaccinated, neutered, flead and wormed with a horrible past that he needs to put behind him. Malachi has been in foster for a while now (and it has taken a while to get to where we are) but is just starting to show how lovely he can be. Malachi does show some fear based aggressive growling and barking at times and he has, on occasion, snapped at and caught adult fingers and toes (don’t ask! 🙄😂) Malachi does not cope with being left or shut away from his carers. To try and avoid that happening he will growl and bark and try to block you getting out of the door. Malachi needs LOTS of positive reinforcement and reassurance.
So far Malachi has reacted well around the smaller dogs in his foster home but has taken a dislike to the resident male border collie. Malachi travels well in the car now, he did used to bark every time the windscreen wipers started up! Malachi walks well on a lead but can pull through excitement at being out and curiosity of other dogs he sees. Off lead Malachi tends to not bother with other dogs. His recall is good, again, using positive reinforcement, that has got better. He knows “sit” although “stay” is a work in progress! Out on a walk, Malachi loves to chase a ball! 😍 He is still learning to play appropriately with other dogs, especially those larger than himself!
Squeaky toys, used as a distraction from the fear barking and growling, have worked well. Reward has varied between: Allowing play with a squeaky toy; Lots of fuss and praise; A tasty treat. Malachi does know that he won’t always get a tasty treat and that his reward varies. Malachi would be best placed in a pet free home, where he would not have to be left alone, with someone that has plenty of time to spend with him. That super special, patient person will be rewarded with the most loyal, faithful and loveable companion!'
