Covid-19 and what it means for LCH
Here at Last Chance Hotel we are certainly feeling the impact of Covid-19. As a charity we look to help not only our local community, but all across the UK.
One of the ways that we help people is to provide advice and resources for pet owners, whether that be bags of food or a supportive telephone call; this is to improve standards of care and condition for animals whose owners may be struggling financially or with social issues. We will always seek to help people to continue to care for their pets, and only encourage them to relinquish them as a last resort. We believe that this not only benefits the animal, but also the owners mental wellbeing and sense of worth. All emergency funds that we receive during this time will help towards keeping animals with their owners, and to avoid pets being unnecessarily relinquished into the charities' care due to financial hardship, by providing much needed food and medicines.
Of course there are times however when owners simply cannot keep their animals due to personal reasons such as domestic abuse or ill health, and we will endeavour to help them to rehome their beloved pets to a new and loving environment. This is something that is unfortunately all too common in this current pandemic. Rescue centres across the country are having to deal with an influx of animals from unwell or deceased owners. Here at Last Chance Hotel we will never turn an animal in need away, but of course this has a financial impact on us as a charity.
During this pandemic we have had to close our charity shop. This is a huge financial loss to us yet our outgoings keep on rising. We estimate that we will lose around £6000 in three months. This figure is staggering, and depending on how and when restrictions are lifted, we may lose even more. As well as our shop being closed, we have had to cancel all of our fundraising events, which includes our Dog Shows and Summer & Spring Fayres. These events are always well attended and it is estimated that the loss will be in excess of around £12,000. We also have, understandably, seen a reduction in our monthly regular donations as our supporters are out of work and struggling themselves.
Last Chance Hotel has over 40 dogs currently in its care. This consists of our 'lifer' dogs, dogs out on lifetime foster, where all their expenses are met by the charity, and dogs that are being assessed for future adoption. All of these dogs require financial stability, and that is something that we are trying so hard to give them.
Any donation, however small, is hugely appreciated as we work so hard to come through this pandemic and give more animals a brighter future. Please click here to give anything you can.
